Muzeul Municipiului București vă invită duminică, 23 iunie, ora 18.00, să participați la dezbaterea publică moderată de Gregory Claeys și Sorin Antohi cu tema „1989 – 2019. From Dystopia to Posthistory”. Evenimentul va avea loc la Casa Filipescu-Cesianu (Calea Victoriei, 151) și este inclus în cadrul primei ediții a Festivalului Idei în Agora, care se va desfășura în perioada 22-24 iunie.
Dialogul va fi în limba engleză.

1989-2019. From Dystopia to Posthistory

In 1989, Eastern Europe and the world seemed to enter a new axial time. With the fall of state communism (a process which was continued in 1991) in most parts of the world, really-existing dystopia appeared to recede and collapse, while a return to history was proclaimed. Even the end of history as usual was announced (this was the good news!). Thirty years later, those visions of historical banality regained or post-historical bliss need to be critically examined and checked against reality. Indeed, what is the balance sheet and what are the meanings of our last three decades? To discuss all of the above and more, an interdisciplinary Royal Colloquium was convened on 22-23 June at the Bucharest City Museum (open to the public; the program is circulated separately) and Elisabeta Palace (conferral of the Sixth Cantemir Award, by invitation only), under the High Patronage of HRH Prince Radu of Romania.

This public debate (in English; interventions in Romanian welcome) concludes the colloquium and extends it in the framework the Ideas in the Agora Festival 2019. The festival, devoted to the analysis of the period between 1989 and 2019, is planned in modular form. The next module is scheduled on 1-4 October, and focuses on Germany and Romania in European and global contexts.

Sorin Antohi is a historian of ideas and translator. Member of the Academia Europaea. He has initated and coordinates the series, Idei în Agora / Ideas in the Agora. More at www.sorinantohi.org.

Gregory Claeys received his PhD from the University of Cambridge in 1983. He has taught in Canada, Germany and the U.S. and since 1992 has been Professor of the History of Political Thought at Royal Holloway, University of London. Member of the Academia Europaea. Chair of the Utopian Studies Society (Europe). He is the author of „Machinery, Money and the Millennium: From Moral Economy to Socialism” (Princeton University Press, 1987), „Citizens and Saints: Politics and Anti-Politics in Early British Socialism” (Cambridge University Press, 1989), „Thomas Paine: Social and Political Thought” (Unwin Hyman, 1989); „The French Revolution Debate in Britain„ (Palgrave Macmillan, 2007), „Imperial Sceptics: British Critics of Empire, 1850–1920” (Cambridge University Press, 2010), „Searching for Utopia: the History of an Idea” (Thames & Hudson, 2011; German, Spanish, Portuguese, Japanese editions), „Mill and Paternalism” (Cambridge University Press, 2013), and „Dystopia: A Natural History” (Oxford University Press, 2016). His last book is „Marx and Marxism” (Penguin Books, 2018) (Chinese, Greek translations agreed). He has edited „The Cambridge Companion to Utopian Literature” (Cambridge University Press, 2010; Turkish edition, 2017) and (with Gareth Stedman Jones) „The Cambridge History of Nineteenth Century Political Thought” (Cambridge University Press, 2011; Chinese edition, 2018), and some fifty volumes of primary sources and edited essays.

Idei în Agora / Ideas in the Agora este un program dedicat analizei spiritului public. A fost inițiat în 2017 de Sorin Antohi și este susținut de Adrian Majuru. Este conceput, planificat și găzduit de Sorin Antohi. Realizat de Muzeul Municipiului București (MMB), în parteneriat cu Asociația Orbis Tertius / A Treia Lume (OT). Întâlnirile au formate diferite (dialoguri, conferințe, colocvii, seminarii, dezbateri publice etc.), propunând un dialog între curente, mișcări, personalități, viziuni despre lume, teorii, ideologii aflate în consens, rezonanță, tensiune ori conflict. Evenimentele sunt filmate și transmise prin live streaming pe YouTube, fiind apoi arhivate la www.sorinantohi.org (unde se arhivează de asemenea afișele și pliantele) și https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCv5R2xEgA_M5nzwIUGl8kcQ

În primul an al programului (21 iunie 2017-24 iunie 2018) au avut loc 26 de întâlniri publice, între care o conferință internațională, dialoguri și conferințe urmate de discuții. Invitații au provenit mai ales din România, precum și din Armenia, Franța, Germania, Israel, Marea Britanie, Republica Moldova, Statele Unite ale Americii, Turcia, Ungaria.
