Andrei Chintilă (n. 1958, d. 2007), fiu de artiști, student eminent al Institutului de Arte Plastice „Nicolae Grigorescu”, artist iconic al generației optzeciste.
Primele sale interacțiuni cu artele plastice au avut loc chiar în atelierele Pangratti alături de părinții săi, Spiru și Simona Vasiliu Chintilă, doi artiști remarcabili la rândul lor. În ceea ce privește parcursul lui Andrei, a fost absolvent al secției de grafică sub îndrumarea profesorilor Gheorghe Ivancenco și Octav Grigorescu. S-a concentrat la început pe eliminarea oricărei influențe din istoria artelor plastice, lăsându-se condus de intuiție și peisajul înconjurător. Maturitatea sa artistică s-a definit prin tușele dure și perspectiva atent selecționată cu privire la personajul principal ales pentru fiecare operă. Referințele sale în cultura cinematografică și din muzica punk sunt două din temele regăsite în pictura sa. Răsunetul trupei The Clash, estetica non-conformistă și filmele hollywoodiene sunt doar câteva din caracteristicile care defineau personalitatea efervescentă a lui Andrei. Ceea ce este de observat în mod special este interesul său în fotografie și importanța pe care o juca perspectiva cadrului fotografic în procesul său artistic. Folosindu-se de fotografie ca tehnică artistică, Andrei adaugă o nouă dimensiune operelor sale, pregătind în mod meticulos încadrarea lucrărilor cu o atenție similară cu cea a ochiului de fotograf.
Expoziția „Behind the Lens”, dedicată artistului Andrei Chintilă organizată la Muzeul Național Brukenthal, se concentrează în mod special pe expunerea acestui interes în arta fotografiei regăsit în procesul artistic și pe temele principale abordate de-a lungul carierei. Este de asemenea un bun prilej de a reda amplitudinea stilurilor picturale abordate în diferitele etape ale vieții sale și de a ne întoarce în timp pentru a trăi un moment din avangarda românească a anilor ’80. Lucrările de grafică, pictură și reperele fotografice din spatele lor redau firul narativ al gândirii artistului și definitivează contextul reperelor vizuale alese.

Andrei Chintilă (b. 1958, d. 2007), son of artists, eminent student of the Institute of Fine Arts „Nicolae Grigorescu”, iconic artist of the 80s generation.
His first interactions with the visual arts took place right in the Pangratti workshops with his parents, Spiru and Simona Vasiliu Chintilă, two outstanding artists. As for Andrei’s career, he was a graduate of the graphics department under the guidance of professors Gheorghe Ivancenco and Octav Grigorescu. At first, he focused on removing any influence of the history of visual arts, letting himself guided by intuition and the surrounding landscape. His artistic maturity was defined by the hard touches and the carefully selected perspective on the main character chosen for each work.
His references in film culture and punk music are two of the themes found in his painting. The echo of The Clash, the non-conformist aesthetics and Hollywood movies are just some of the characteristics that defined Andrei’s effervescent personality. What is particularly noteworthy is his interest in photography and the importance of the perspective on the photographic frame played in his artistic process. Using photography as an artistic technique, Andrei adds a new dimension to his works, meticulously preparing the framing of the works with an attention similar to that of a photographer’s eye.
The exhibition „Behind the Lens”, dedicated to the artist Andrei Chintilă organized by the Brukenthal National Museum, focuses in particular on the exposure of this interest in the art of photography found in the artistic process and on the main themes covered throughout his career. It is also a good opportunity to show the amplitude of the pictural styles approached in the different stages of his life and to go back in time to experience a moment of the Romanian avant-garde of the 80s. The graphic works, paintings and the photographic landmarks behind them reproduce the narrative thread of the artist’s thinking and complete the context of the chosen visual landmarks.
