Descriere:
(Erwin Kessler, curator)

Description:
Since the 70s, Matt Mullican is the creator of a private semiotic system covering the whole universe. From cosmology to psychology, from evanescent to titanic, his idiosyncratic sign language explores existence, consciousness, birth, death, violence, love.
Matt Mullican is one of the first visual prestidigitators of what we nowadays know as icon.
Transcendence is a latent desire of a paradoxical conceptualist construction, which contains Christianity only as a recessive gene.
In his encyclopedia of signs, the communication of information is spiritually transfigured.
Since the same 70s, Ion Grigorescu generated a network of actions with artistic stakes and social positioning that – through seemingly precarious means – charted the same territory, that of spirituality.
His encyclopedia of provocative gestures, his alphabet of tacitly remonstrant shapes and his unintelligible critical language had progressively mapped an inner territory of religious, mystical experience.
Mural painting from churches, the icons and socially religious projects kept growing in importance in his esthetic system.
Throughout their entire work, both Matt Mullican and Ion Grigorescu approached – apparently in spite – metaphysical horizons, through text, drawing, painting, performance, photography, video. Through various avant-garde media that seemed to deepen their gap with metaphysics. This dialogue brings them together, showing them on this road they reached from opposite directions.
